Hey all! Happy Tuesday! I am celebrating with my 100th post today, although the post may not be as lighthearted as it should be. We can save that for the 101th post.
Last week, I blogged about my horrible Diet Coke addiction and how it was starting to effect me, physically. In fact, this cartoon may have been me (replace “natalie” with “ann“) –
I’m happy to report that today is my 3rd day without Diet Coke. I’m not so happy to report that I have been feeling miserable – headaches, dizzy, nauseous, irritable (right, Jay?) and generally crabby. I had no idea how much that soda was really a significant part of my life. I also feel embarrassed that it got to the point that the soda was making me physically ill before I noticed the addiction and consequences.
I was looking around the interwebs and found a post by Somyr Perry on this blog. She talks about going through a Diet Coke “detox” and here’s what she said –
“Almost two weeks ago I quit cold turkey. The first day was fine. The second day was rough; I had headaches and used ibuprofen to relieve the pain. The third and fourth days were heinous: headaches, severe fatigue, crankiness, insomnia and cravings. I didn’t think I could make it through that first week.”
She did make it through the first week, and continued to her goal of giving up diet coke completely. I can’t wait to be done with this horrible detox and feeling “normal” again – even better than normal! I’m happy to know that the feelings I have and the side affects are completely normal and common. It’s scary to think about how the chemicals in Diet Coke can cause me to feel like this – if you don’t know about them, you can read it here.
Meanwhile, thanks for the suggestions and comments. I am feeling really good about my decision to stop drinking Diet Coke because of the long-term healthy benefits. I know my decision isn’t right for everyone, but it WILL help me continue in my weight-loss journey and help me reach my goal of living a healthy, active lifestyle. For now? If you see me, try to avoid me. And if you happen to have a Diet Coke with you? All bets are off.
