Orange-ya glad I didn’t say banana?

I am loving oranges this year. LOVING.

Specifically the Blood-Orange and the Cara Cara.

According to the Wikipedia Page about Blood Oranges…..

“While all oranges are likely of hybrid origin between the pomelo and the tangerine, blood oranges originated as a mutation of the sweet orange. Blood oranges may have originated in either China or the Southern Mediterranean, where they have been grown since the 18th century. The anthocyanins which give the orange its distinct maroon color will only develop when temperatures are low at night, as during the Mediterranean fall and winter. Blood oranges cultivated in the US are in season from December – March (Texas)  and November – May (California).”

Oranges as part of a healthy breakfast - Delish!

According to the Wikipedia page about the Cara Cara Oranges….

“The Cara cara navel, or red navel orange is an early-to-midseason navel orange believed to have developed as a cross between the Washington navel and the Brazilian Bahia navel. Cara caras did not enter the U.S consumer produce market until the late 1980s and were carried only by specialty markets for many years thereafter. From the major growing regions, South African cara caras are ready for market starting in August, Venezuelan fruits arrive in October and Californian fruits make their seasonal debut in late November.”

Oranges + String Cheese - I love this snack!

I remember having both types of oranges last year – Blood Oranges and Cara Cara Oranges, but I DON’T remember being this crazy for them! I just can’t get enough!

Are you digging Oranges this season? Do you have a favorite type of orange?

I like oranges but the smell of the peel under my nails bothers me, so I rarely eat them. :[ At the farmers market last weekend, one of the produce vendors had mandiquats – a cross between a mandarin orange/satsuma and kumquat. About the size of a big strawberry, more used for juice than anything. But so deliciously sweet and tart! I’m going to cut them up and put them inside a roasted chicken today!

yesterday i tried for the first time the blood orange flavor of chobani greek yogurt- it was SOOOOOOOO good. I also saw a ‘craft’ in pinterest where you can use an orange as a candle to make your house smell like oranges. So versatile :)

Yes! I do love the Cara Cara, but any California oranges will do when in season. My husband won’t let me buy oranges out of season… meaning when they come all the way from Chile, South Africa, and Australia. He’s right! They taste better when they have less distance to travel! :-)

  9. I haven’t enjoyed any this year . . . YET! Thanks for the reminder – I have been enjoying red grapefruit – but will also add some oranges.

Grapefruits are killing me right now. After a few weeks of blood oranges, I just felt like it was time to make the leap. Who knows what’s next, really.
