After our re-charge at Emily’s parents’ house, we were ready to finish the race. Van 1 had been running since early Saturday morning and were finishing their 3rd leg. We got ready for our upcoming Leg 3 by applying our Ragnar tattoos -
Everybody rocked their Leg 3 runs. Alana from Van 1 volunteered to cover Karin’s leg (after her injury on Leg 2), and killed it. Everybody ran quickly and I think all the runners was looking forward to being done.
My Leg 3 was 4.4 miles along East and West River Parkway, crossing at the Ford Parkway Bridge in St. Paul and Minneapolis. It was a beautiful run, with a killer hill in the 1st mile. Thankfully, I had the walkie-talkie and could let our driver, Josh, know that I needed water. I also enlisted my super-secret weapon: Jay. I asked Jay to come run the leg with me because I knew I had been depleted. My body wasn’t used to running 3 times in 2 days, and I had no physical energy. I had no mental toughness. He came and met me around the exchange point and was THE BEST running partner a girl could ask for!
He stuck by me for the full leg and talked to me about Ragnar and his weekend activities. It took my mind off running and helped me relax and log the miles. It wasn’t pretty. But I finished my leg. I walked a little bit, and the heat slowed me down. I was completely exhausted but absolutely elated to be finished running! Mary was our final runner, and she had 3.7 miles to the finish. She finished strong, and the entire team crossed the finish line together!
Of course, I was estatic to be earning my Ragnar medal.
They gave out pizza and beer at the finish, and in all honesty – it was the best pizza and beer of my LIFE.
The whole reason I did this Ragnar Relay was because my co-worker Merilee talked me into it. She’s a long-time athlete and a fantastic runner, and she convinced me to do it. I would have never had the courage to do this without her support – and the encouragement of my van-mates!
My van-mates: Shelly, Holly, Karin and Josh, Emily and Mary: You guys are amazing! You taught me SO MANY lessons about being a strong and successful runner. You helped me overcome nerves and pre-race anxiety and you encouraged me to do the best I can do! You supported me, cheered for me, and inspired me to finish my legs and together we finished the Ragnar Relay together! I consider myself lucky to call you my team members, and my friends.
My life is changed because of you, and because of this race. The Ragnar Relay was something so incredible and I am so happy to have run it together!!
